Insights into how a hidden history of an eighteenth century forger was revealed and why the crime was so popular in Georgian England.
A Forger in the Family: During the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, monetary forgeries were rife with over 300 people executed for the crime. When Rachael Rowe started tracing her family tree, she discovered an ancestor who was a forger which sparked an interest in the crime and in social inequalities. In this talk, Rachael will talk about her research into a hidden family secret (including a twist in the tale), and will also discuss the background to financial crime in the eighteenth century.
